ragga and ska–the soul of summer May 21, 2005

I’ve always been a sucker for summers. For those into astrology, they attribute that to the fact that I am a leo (sun and stuff like that). Anyway, nothing beats the heat of a summer night event with the following ingredients:

  1. the right crowd (a melting pot of locals and out-of-towners, of different backgrounds and personalities)
  2. the right food and drinks (the best pizza and anything else in the menu)
  3. the right venue (quite crowded yet intimate enough)
  4. the right music (the best reggae and ska the islands could offer)

With those mentioned above, i’m talking about the Island Riddims Tour that took place in Hayahay last Friday night (though starless, humid and warm, it was perfect nonetheless). The venue was beginning to fill up as early as 8 pm (showtime was at 10), and by the time we got there, we had to sit on extra chairs beside the Tiangge (a shop inside the venue). There’s another crowd who decided to skip paying the ticket (140 plus free beer) and settled for a free space at Escano (though they weren’t exactly inside, they were satisfied to just hear the music).

The line-up of performers included island joe, enchi with kakay (the local fave), tropical depression, and of course, jr. kilat. People were moving to every beat and filling themselves with the rhythm, that was way too infectious to resist. It was some kind of a metaphysical experience that pushes your feet to dance and your voicebox to sing out your heart’s content (though you only know the chorus). And to add icing on the cake: I got to share all of this with Ken! The vibe never went off even after the show ended (at around 3 am). Now, that’s what a summer party is all about! (think, a bora party with soul)

Kudos to all the people behind the success (te k, your sleepless nights finally paid off!).

editor’s note: had some shots taken through my mobile’s trusty old cam, but will post them as soon as i purchase a bluetooth dongle

love song May 10, 2005

lately i’ve been sorting my iTunes and i just can’t stop listening to Oliver James sing the song entitled “Greatest Story Ever Told“. i think it’s safe to say that it’s my love song for the week.

i am sooooo missssiiiiiinnnnng ken damn much! call me abnormal, but despite being together for most of the last three years and 5 months of my life, being separated from him keeps my soul longing for him. yeah, it couldn’t get any cornier or crappier than this, but it’s the truth. just seeing other couples together in the mall or listening to love songs (and even that horrendous song we recorded in my phone with the falcetto voices)…i could rant on and on for hours.

but as always, this “missing ken” thing is somehow, welcomed. i mean, it’s a cool feeling to miss someone, though ironic in many ways…but bearable.

for the record, i’m improving with my missing-ken-coping-skills. this blog thingie has been a contributing factor, and also. i divert the sadness to the excitement of seeing him again.

ken, i’ve been singing an awful lot of love songs for you, from the day i met you till this very day… and that won’t stop till the day the “fat lady sings”… i love you

…breeze… May 6, 2005

i’m not talking about the detergent, so as to make it clear.

location: dumaguete

i’m coming home tonight, but will reach the shores of cdo early tomorrow morning. this is what i call a respite of what i have been going through. at long last (temporarily, though) i will not be budgeting money i don’t even have. i could perhaps, also snag some beach time. eat as much mcdonalds as i want (but when i do get there, i tend to become a hermit and stay in the comfort of my own seclusion). shopping is definitely out of the question. see my friends? definitely! oh, and i have to find myself some spartan flipflops (no offense to havaiana users–and to reiterate myself, i don’t have the luxury of excess cash). coffee? i’ll have an instant cup of coffee any day.

as soon as i get my go signal from the good ol’ college, i’ll be starting my volunteer duty there is cdo. i’m a bit anxious, considering that it’s been almost a year since i was last inside the operating room, and OVER a year since i was last inside the delivery room. also, more tension builds up as i am to embark in this “mission” alone.. unless of course i can convince the good folks in the hospital back home to extend their arms to my other “colleagues”. whatever the outcome may be, i can’t wait to get my hands (gloved, mind you) on those gooey internal organs (the perks of being a doctor or a nurse).

…hmmm… i can absolutely feel the breeze now…oops…they just turned the air conditioner on…
