me thinking out loud

the ripple effect August 4, 2006

Just because the world is a seemingly huge place, it doesn’t mean we act as if it is. We are so caught up in this personal matrix we call our solace that we forget there’s a whole planet out there filled with so many adversities and wars and conflicts. Everytime we turn on the TV and watch the news, we dismiss it as another media circus, when in fact, it is an minute by minute account of the unpleasant reality going on outside the four corners of our retreat. I think I’ve written a similar piece before, I don’t know, calling those of you who have the slightest spark of interest in this matter, and yet here i am…hoping.

Weeks ago, when the war in Lebanon broke out, a plea for cease-fire was automatically started. I got mine from www.ceasefirecampaign.org. I joined in and signed the petition. 14th of August, 0500 GMT, a cease-fire was declared, per UN decree. With this turn of events (and our fingers crossed), I would like to believe that in some way, I was part of this.

So you see, the world really isnt that BIG (think what the internet can do these days). It’s up to you and me, and whether or not we enlist ourselves for some cause we believe in. Technology has really made this so easy for us, and organizations have become specific to see if we believe in the same thing. The ripple effect doesn’t only work on water. Making a difference can start at your fingertips.
