me thinking out loud

when lightning strikes May 23, 2007

Filed under: life, random thoughts — kring @ 1:14 pm

It’ll probably hit you.

Ken was face to face with an actual lightning that hit the earth 200 meters from where he was standing.  If I were in his place, I would be stunned.  Then I’d run indoors, of course. This electrically charged force of nature is definitely a sight to behold, but nevertheless, dangerous.  As a young kid, my first encounter with Benjamin Franklin was in the cartoon feature “Ben and Me”… remember the the little church mouse who supposedly rode Ben Franklin’s kite to prove that lightning is indeed electrically charged? ANYBODY? I sure do hope so (or else I’ll be sounding like someone who’s regressed to childhood).  Anyway, that little piece of history lesson (of course we’ve heard of the infamous KITE experiment), tickled my imagination and inspired me to make my own kite, but that was the peak of summer, not a single drop of rain, not a cloud in site.  Do I still want to do Ben’s little experiment? Hah! Not a chance.  I’m scared at the thought of lightning.

Back to Ken’s near-hit experience…I will not speak on his behalf, but this I’m sure:  I’m glad he was 2oo meters away…

we are poets May 22, 2007

Ever since my once-upon-a-time days, I’ve always been a lover of literature, of any readable form.  I may not write that well, but I am patient enough to dissect each line, word, and down to the last punctuation.  So what does that make me?

A lot of things.

I am a reader.

A fan.

A student.

A critique (have I any right to be one?)

A thinker.

A dreamer.

A poet.

During my 2-week sojourn to Dumaguete, I was uber blessed to sit in a poetry reading by some of the great literary minds in our country.  The Dumaguete National Writers Workshop just concluded.  Mere mortals like me were able to share the same summer night’s breeze with panelists and fellows alike. GH Abad…Marjorie Evasco to name a few… listening to them transported me back to my long-lost self.  I am so consumed with trying be a literary genius, that I’ve forgotten the elating effect of being enraptured by words.

For last 5 years, the only lexicon I’ve had contact with was a Medical Dictionary.  It would definitely seem close to impossible for me to come up with a poem or a short story with an arsenal of terms pertaining to the human body.  Hay naku!  I can’t seem to decide if entering a medical field was a blessing or a curse..okay, I am exaggerating.  Every aspect of my life has been immensely enriched by God.  But I still have to admit to the fact that my preoccupation with my course in college led me to a different path.  Save for a 3-unit required course on Philippine Literature, it has all been about healing people and leading individuals to a better life– in a Nursing perspective.

Excuses!  Excuses! wahaha

Maybe I’ll just go back to reading blogs, dissecting poems, and living the life I’ve been accustomed to.

Thank you writers for inspiring me to read and aspire to have your way with words.

my life’s work May 21, 2007

Or something to that effect.  I must have done something to anger the gods of the multiply world since I cannot seem to log in to my account!  After 2 weeks of being a pseudo-photojournalist, I am finally home and ready to load ‘em up, then wham! My pent-up enthusiasm down the drain…boo-hoo!  What am I to do now?  I was thinking of saying goodbye to my Multiply account forEVAH, but as what Ken said “Your life’s work?”…hahaha… is it?  What was I trying to achieve having such an account?  Yep it was easy to navi around the site, and yep, i am a self-confessed photo addict (not necessarily vain!!!..hmph!), and more importantly, it was a way for me to check out what my long-lost friends have been up to.  I guess I’ll just wait for some answers then.  Hopefully their “Contact Us” link is as effective as I’m nearly pissed right now.

A girl will never be complete without her boodle(a new word I learned..and it’s really a word) of galpals. Just think about it?! Who else will gamely accompany you to the restroom, whenever, wherever? Listen to you rant across the phone line for hours and hours, and even until you see each other the next day. Empathize with your unrequited love stories, drink with you even if they have no reason to drink, laugh at you, cry with you…and all else in between.  This is my tribute to 5 girls whom I’ve bonded with since high school.  Despite the temporary separation during our college years (and Cyndy’s current Cebu stint), God must have decided that I still need them.  These are my people.

me & superBESt

Siangie: My ultimate best friend. She’s my pick-me-up person. The one I would call whenever I find myself in such horrid situations. A lot of people mistake her as mataray or maldita…okay, they made no mistake at all…hehehe. But that’s just an impression. In reality, she is this kind, approachable, down-to-earth, UN-diva person who’s also as beautiful as she is talented. Yep, she has a lot hidden under her sleeves. If I were stuck on an island with a friend, I’d want that friend to be her. Aside from the fact that she’s my best friend (a given reason), she’s definitely a survivor.

the mayee we know: kalog!!! (still pretty despite the silly faces)

Mayee: the quintessential beauty and brains, however, she’s WAY beyond that. Mayee just luuuuvs to talk and luuuuuvs to listen. Don’t be fooled by such serene and ethereal exterior, she’s definitely a nut inside. Most of the time, Mayee is like the preschoolers she’s teaching– wide-eyed to the fascinating things in life, which really makes her someone who appreciates it, as a whole.

jun nacua-mr. debbie-me                    twinx since 6th grade

Debbie: The tough cookie, Debbie is my twin since the 6th grade. You may be asking why, well, it will take me forever to tell you that! hahaha…she has always been strong in alot of ways, but that doesn’t make her hard.  She’s like ice cream covered in hard chocoloate fudge…mushy on the inside.  We both love to sing, but she reigns as the Karaoke Queen!  Whenever she’s upset, she cooks/bakes…that’s why we’re always more than happy to comfort her whenever she’s down (hahaha!!!)

with bananaman d back of nana

Nana: Soft-spoken but stern, Nana was my movie date back in high school, and my favorite partner when it comes to people-watching.  Very unpretentious and more often than not, careful with the decisions she make.  Though she may stumble a lot of times, she has always been determined to get up and get on with her life.

the gorgeous & talented cyndy!

Cyndy: Smart-ass and city chic, that’s definitely Cyndy. She’s very much responsible and at times, a bit headstrong, but so far, that has come to her advantage. If there’s anyone among my friends that can survive life in a big city, that would be Cyndy.  We are all BIG talkers in our small circle, but it’s this girl who definitely has a lot to say (and people would really shut up and listen).  Cyndy has gone through tough times, but that hasn’t stopped her from being on top of her game.  She has been greatly missed lately since she’s based in Cebu.

I guess it’s safe to say that I wouldn’t be the person I am now if it weren’t for them.  They, like the rest of the human population, have their flaws too, but this time I would just like to celebrate friendship and sisterhood (hence, no bad stuff to see in here.. ;p).  –> freynds, thanks for the wonderful (and horribly humiliating) experiences we’ve shared.  I’m just relieved that no amount of distance, time, or absence sa mga dates nato, could ever stop us from conquering the world…together.  Ayus!  Love yah!

rants:

1. Ukay2x used to be fun way back in high school, but now, my golly!  Foreign merchants have made a circus out of it.  It’s quite apparent that they are playing along our being “excited” when it comes to the rejects of the 1st world.

2. My beloved SE K700 has been giving me too much headache already.  First the battery charging (500 bucks), the joystick (700 bucks), and now, keys 3-6-9 and # are not working!!! On top of that, I carelessly submerged the spare 8310 in salt water!  Huhwat is it with me and cellphones?  Are my hands cursed when it comes to gadgets? Geez! I am stuck with an ancient version, but so far, has not failed me.

3. AC Milan defeated Manchester United on the UEFA Champions League semis.  How EVER could such a thing happened?  Well, the world knows how amazing Kaka is, but really, the top English team couldn’t even salvage a 3-0 defeat.  My heart is still breaking…

4. Nothing good on cable TV.

5. Maging Sino Ka Man being oh-so-dragging to the next level!  What is up with that?!?

raves

1. I’m finally done with my teaching demo. And all I can say is “not bad!”

2. Tatlong tulog na lang, Dumaguete na naman!

3. summer=shorts and slippers!!!!

4. Finally had the courage to drop the friendster blog…wasn’t that bad after all.  Whew! After all the melodrama…hahaha

5. The Sun and Sand and Sea….

6. Chocolates and cold water …lots and lots of cold water…

7. Making money out of old clothes, or clothes we no longer use..a.k.a. Garage Sale!

8. Badminton and endorphins!

9.  Ahhhhh, life! ;-)
